Fire Safety Awareness Training

This opening module sets out why fire safety matters in every UK workplace and what the course will cover. You'll learn the basic principles of fire safety, the everyday risks that fires pose to people and premises, and how a shared awareness of those risks helps keep colleagues and visitors safe.

Here you'll learn to recognise the common fire hazards found in workplaces, from faulty electrical equipment and overloaded sockets to combustible materials, hot work and poor housekeeping. Understanding where these risks arise is the first step in preventing fires, and it underpins the kind of practical observation expected of everyone on site.

This module explains the fire triangle – the heat, fuel and oxygen that a fire needs to ignite and keep burning. You'll see how fire travels through a building by conduction, convection, radiation and direct burning, and why removing any one element of the triangle is central to controlling and extinguishing a fire safely.

Not all fires are the same, and this module covers the recognised classes of fire based on the fuel involved, such as ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, gases, metals, electrical equipment and cooking oils. Knowing how fires are classified helps you understand why the right type of response and extinguishing agent must be matched to each situation.

Prevention is always better than response, and this module looks at the practical control measures that reduce the likelihood of a fire taking hold. You'll learn about safe storage of flammable materials, good housekeeping, the maintenance of equipment, and the simple everyday actions that help keep a workplace as fire-safe as possible.

This module explains the fire safety signs you'll see around any workplace, including prohibition, warning, mandatory and safe-condition signs, and what each one is telling you. You'll also learn how fire detection and alarm systems work, why prompt warning saves lives, and how to respond the moment an alarm sounds.

Here you'll learn about the main types of portable fire extinguisher – water, foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide and wet chemical – and which class of fire each is designed to tackle. The module builds basic awareness of when it is safe to attempt to use an extinguisher and, just as importantly, when to leave the area and raise the alarm instead.

A calm, orderly evacuation is essential in a fire emergency, and this module covers how to follow evacuation procedures, use designated escape routes and reach an assembly point safely. You'll understand the importance of keeping exits and routes clear at all times and why familiarity with your workplace's plan can make all the difference.

This module explains the duties of fire marshals and fire wardens, the staff who help coordinate a safe evacuation and carry out routine fire safety checks. You'll learn what these roles involve day to day, how they support the wider workforce, and why clear responsibilities help an emergency response run smoothly.

This module outlines the key legal duties around fire safety in England and Wales, centred on the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. You'll learn about the role of the responsible person, the requirement for a fire risk assessment, and the obligations employers and staff share to keep workplaces compliant and safe.

The course closes with a short multiple-choice final assessment that checks your understanding of the topics covered throughout. It gives you the chance to confirm what you've learned about fire prevention, response and your responsibilities, and a successful result leads to your accredited Fire Safety Awareness Certificate.
